Ten on Tuesday -10 Ways to Beat the Winter Blahs.

Yummy yarn cakes

Today's topic hits home for me, as I am most definitely not a Winter person.  I need sunshine (lots of it) and warmth to perform at my optimum level.  Everything from laundry to paying bills is harder for me during those cold winter months.  The grey skies bum me out, the cold cuts through me and settles in my bones,  and everything becomes a chore.  Top of the list of winter peeves has got to be de-icing the windshield on the car before I can drive the offspring to school in the frigid vehicle.  But, when you have lovely hobbies like I do, here's how to combat that pervasive bleakness:
  1. Go to local yarn store with your non-knitting sister who has a great eye for yarn and loves you to knit her things
  2. Get a new hairstyle
  3. Knit something challenging and exciting that will keep you warm and get you noticed
  4. Use your crockpot.  There's something about the smell of good food cooking all day in your home that cozies things up nicely
  5. Treat yourself to a marathon of your favorite shows via netflix, on-demand, or TVo
  6. Spend a day going through your hobby stash(es) and dreaming about the possibilities
  7. Snuggle up in something warm and cozy, make lots of your favorite hot beverage, and curl up with a book you've been planning on reading for a long time but haven't made time for
  8. Go through your music collection and put on some forgotten favorites and crank them up
  9. Take a class for fun - art, hobby, new language, whatever has been pulling at you for a while
  10. Plan out a home  project for Spring
Of course, the most important way to beat the blahs is to cultivate a grateful heart.  Knitting every day helps...

Today She's-A My Birthday

Half. A. Century.  Seems like a long time when you put it like that, but it went by in a flash.  Especially the last 20 years or so.  Three years have passed since the Awful Diagnosis. Now each birthday is sweeter than the last.  Highlights from today:
  1. My two youngest remembered and wished me "happy birthday" with no prompting from husband.
  2. I get to see my youngest play basketball tonight.
  3. I got a wicked funny birthday card from my oldest brother and my favorite sister-in-law.
  4. Lots of "happy birthday" messages on Facebook and phone calls from family.
  5. Husband sent a birthday e-card.
  6. Finished writing up pattern for Shadow Scarf and posted on "Free Pattern" page  Encountered problem.  Only picture posted.  Working to fix the technical problem so that pattern can be posted.  Bummer.
  7. I received a package in the mail with this inside:

It's a great day to be alive...

Ten on Tuesday...Or Friday?

Okay, so this week's topic is one I can relate to a little bit more: 10 things you always have in your car.  I spend a significant amount of time in my car on a daily basis, being the designated chauffeur for the school-age kids and until recently the college kid.  Without further ado:

  1. My favorite CD's - my taste is very eclectic, so there's a wide range of music represented here.  Currently, I'm listening to Archie Fisher - Man with a Rhyme.
  2. Books - usually something of a spiritual nature as well as the odd fiction novel.  Current novel is a cozy mystery by Sheila Connelly.  Two spiritual books, one on the Sacred Heart devotion and the other on the Rosary with reflections from the Gospels.
  3. Book of variety puzzles/brain teasers.  Right now it's Logic problems.  About 2/3 complete.
  4. My current registration and proof of insurance
  5. Spare change
  6. Extra blankets- for picnicking or bundling up in case we get stuck in the car for any length of time
  7. Some article of clothing left behind by one of the above mentioned kids or myself, usually a sweatshirt or light jacket
  8. First aid kit
  9. Roadside assistance kit complete with flashlight, flares, jumper cables
  10. Pen/Pencil and pad of paper
Jeez, I could go on, but I'll keep to the proscribed number...

10 on Tuesday

Youngest child hoopin' --Go Double 0

Well, today's 10 on Tuesday is not a topic that really thrills me, but here goes, in no particular order:

10 Tips for Sticking With Your Fitness Routine.

  1. Work out with a partner, particularly a very good friend that you enjoy spending time with
  2. Define goals and keep track of your progress (this works really well if you're the goal-oriented type, obviously)
  3. Reward yourself when you achieve milestones in your goals
  4. Tell people - if you make it public, there are more people to keep you from slacking off, plus now your pride is involved.  You don't want people to think you can't do it, right?
  5. Find a routine that you enjoy - if you don't like to run, don't start off with running.  Maybe swimming is more enjoyable.
  6. If you're the social type, choose a team sport as part of your fitness routine
  7. Have distractions like an i-pod with music you love
  8. Multi-task.  If a brisk walk is your thing, try praying while you walk
  9. If you're stuck in a rut, switch up your routine.  Always start your jog around the lake in one direction?  Try going the opposite way.  This one can have surprising results.  I used to run 1.5 miles every day in the same direction.  Tried it the opposite way one day and HATED it.  The whole run felt wrong.  But this might work for you, or it might make you appreciate the comfort of your boring routine, after all.
  10. Always work out at the same time.  Make it a habit and you'll stick to it.  Vary it, and you might just find yourself skipping it.
